Writing Outliner now supports Windows 8 and Office 2013 (32bit)

Posted in: Version History by Edwin on March 31, 2013

New Writing Outliner with Windows 8 and Word 2013 support.

Writing Outliner v1.6.20.802 is available for download now, with the following enhancements:

  • Supports Windows 8 (32bit and 64bit).
  • Supports Word 2013 (32bit only).
  • Fixed the bugs that might cause MS Word would not run with Writing Outliner.
  • Bugfixes that pops up error messages windows.
  • The new SQLITE database engine which is used to store project files and other data.
  • And new versions of all the third party software components that should provide better stability.

And the upgrade is free for all customers! (The new version is coming a little late, sorry).

Here are the trial version and full version download link.

Some data security notes:

  1. It’s not recommended to put your project files in Dropbox,  because it seems that all reported project file corruptions were stored in Dropbox.

Although the SQLITE database engine which used to store project data has been updated and this problem might no longer exist, but it’s suggested that you store your projects out side of Dropbox.

Please let me know if you have any problems using this new version of the Word addin.

Help needed, if you like Writing Outliner and want it to move forward

I’m  the only developer of Writing Outliner, and if you have noticed, I barely promote Writing Outliner, well, there are some reasons, the primary reasons including that I don’t like or am good at marketing, and I don’t know well the community of the Writing Outliner users.

Well, this might sound unprofessional, but I want to be honest 😉

So I’m here asking for some help, many of you praised or said you love Writing Outliner, now it’s time to show your support 😉

What I need is simple, if you like Writing Outliner, recommend Writing Outliner to other people.

Your help will help Writing Outliner to move forward. Thanks.

And if any of you can and want to  re-sell Writing Outliner, that’ll be better 🙂 Please contact me privately, tell me what you need and what you can do.

What’s next?

Improving the stability and performance of Writing Outliner is the main task.

It is great to see you back Edwin! I installed Google drive and store my projects in it instead of dropbox and that works fine.

I use Windows 8 and Word 2013, so that’s great news. However I cannot proceed to purchase the program before you fix the Unicode issue.

Incredibly useful add-on that I use daily. This should be standard issue with all MS Word installations. Thanks for bringing this great product to market Edwin. I will spread the word – no pun intended – to everyone I can. Love this product!

Hi Edwin. Why not approach Microsoft and bundle it with Word as a discount coupon? Microsoft has done so in the past with other developers. If sales go way up, however, you may need some help desk guys. (Better make sure it is stable enough :))

There are also sites like GiveAwayOfTheDay.com that developers use to get out their software for free just to make it better known. Of course CNET download and Download.com allows trials versions to be downloaded. All the competitive products for writing seem to focus more on marketing and have stagnant products. I think an established channel is the best way to go (CNET, Download.com, bundling) than having a lot of individuals flogging samples etc.

I was also wondering if you could make a scaled down version that works with Wordpad. You could give it free and link to an upgrade version for Word.

Would love to give this a try. Am using Scrlvener at present merely because of previous issues with Outliner.
Does the trial version uninstall cleanly if I wish to not use it?

Would truly like to give this a try as all my data and most work is still in Word.

Thank you for staying with this program and making it available.

  6. @bsl, ProjectFolders will not have any unicode problem.
    Video demo here: http://writingoutliner.com/writing-software/blog/projectfolders-pre-beta-demo-video-is-now-available/

    @RJ, I appreciate that!

@AP, thanks for the suggestions, when ProjectFolders is ready I might do that 😉 it’s not possible to build such things for WordPad technically, since it doesn’t provide such sensibilities as MS Word does.

@Jim Curts, yes, if you want to uninstall Writing Outliner, don’t forget to close all MS Word windows first, this is important for a clean uninstallation.

Thanks Edwin. I hope to see the next version of Writing Outliner soon. This is an excellent tool for helping writers write, and bundled sales offer with MS, like AP has suggested, will certainly help in raising awareness about WO. The next version of WO, which will tackle the bugs from earlier version will also give us users renewed motivation to promote it. All the best, and thanks for bringing to us this excellent tool.

  8. It seems that the release notes for Writing Outliner v1.6.20.802 are missing within the manual that I can open within Writing Outliner? That`s a bit irritating, but the new version seems to have installed (Word 2002).

  9. @Amar, ProjectFolders is complete design and it in no way alters the document content, but only operate the documents on the file level – ie renaming, copying and moving, so it’ll much stable.

    @Michael Logies, sorry, I was in a hurry 🙂

    Hi Edwin

Just bought your software as a replacement for scrivener – I like to word in MS Word’s nicer interface, and take advantage of EndNote. Any idea when the new version will be available? And as I’ve bought WO I get a free upgrade right?

    Best

  13. @Tony, sorry but can’t actually tell the time frame, that’s because another project (I’ll be announcing soon) is occupying a plenty of my time. And yes, all current Writing Outliner customers will get an early version of ProjectFolders.

    Hi Edwin,

Writing Outliner is so great…It’ blows Scrivener away!!!

I’m curious about ProjectFolders. Will you have a beta that we can start testing anytime soon?

One small feature request. In WO, I cannot find a way to sort the tags. Is there a way to do that? Please put that capability into ProjectFolders.

Thanks for this great product…I use it daily.

  15. Dave, about the time frame the only thing I can tell is that I’ll notify all of you via newsletter when it’s ready. about sorting tags, do you mean sorting the tags associated with a doc? My thinking is that to display the tags in alphabetic order, it’s most natural IMHO.

    Hi Edwin,

Happy New Year! I hope things are going well with you. I’m using WO more and more and really think your app has a lot of potential for big sales. It is just so much better than Scrivener.

Do you have any progress to report? Are you still working on ProjectFolders.

    Edwin,

I see that I did not answer your response to my question above about sorting takes. Yes, I agree that if you sorted tags in alphabetical order that would be desirable.
