I would like to have an option to switch off the information panel you get when you go over an item (with the mouse pointer) in the outliner. Sometimes this panel appears when I am typing in the document. It's starting to annoy me.

And do you have some information on the development of the update?

@Garion,

The currently under working new version will not have such problem, just as I stated in the blog post I announced the revamp plan. However, the revamp is not as fast as I expected though.

Hello Edwin,

Can I also ask you to make it compatible with the upcoming word-add-in of Citavi? Citavi is the market leader in Germany after all and also available in English by the way.

That would be great, as I'm not sure whether I could use your fine piece of software when it is usable in conjunction with Citavi.

Hello,

I'm still contemplating buying this software for my dissertation project. However, any kind of loss of data is a no-go, when it comes to serious research. I'm aware that every software has its minor flaws, but this would really put me off from buying it.

Can you guarantee daten security?

Hi grahamrhind,

Please try the following to avoid such problems:

Don't close Word window by right clicking on the Windows taskbar then select Close, but instead, close a project using the Close menu item which can be found when you click on the 'Menu' button on the left pane.

And I believe such errors will most likely be eliminated in the revamped version that's still under working. Thanks for your patience.

Hi,

The more stable version you have just released seems to have a major problem. When I close a project I am working on, WO crashes, and the name of the project I have just worked on disappears from the projects list. To continue I have to close Word and restart it.

No work is lost, but it's a pain in the ****. I've only been getting this with this patched version.

Thanks

Currently, Zotero works perfectly when combining documents into a single one. Edwin, as you develop the new version please see that it continues to work well with Zotero. This, for me, is the big advantage over Scrivener (and it might be also for many other academics frustrated with Scrivener's lack of compatibility with Zotero). Thanks! I'm really liking the program.

I've just started using Writing Outliner for academic writing and, although I'm not sure about Endnote, it seems to work perfectly with Zotero and the Zotero plugin for Word (this is one of the big reasons I switched to Writing Outliner from competing software that isn't based on Word).

Hi--thanks for the input back.

Option 1) If I understand you correctly, you are saying to just sync the files. Yes, would love to....but neither WO nor I actually remember or track WHERE those original files are! So each time I would have to navigate/click to the correct folder where the files are....if there are 15 documents in WO, with the originals in different folders according to function, that is a nightmare.

I think this was Problem 5 I listed:

"PROBLEM 5 I could manually export each document back to where it was imported and overwrite it...except that the Outliner program and I have no idea what folder the original one is stored in!!!!!

I would have to go thru the export process for EACH document in the project file and copy over the original one? That could be ok...except the program seems to automactically open to a generic folder to save things, so it doesn't even remember where the imported document comes from..neither do I!"

For example:
ArticleB (import from C:\Documents\Bookideas\ArticleB.doc)
ArticleC (import from C:\Documents\Magazines\Summer2011\ArticleC.doc)
PublisherListD (import from C:\Documents\Resources\PublisherListD.doc)

these are all in differnt folders, and clicking to each one and drilling down multiple layers would take forever so that they would be synced. Can WO do this for me? Could it remember where they came from?
**************************************************
Option 2) Again, if I understand correctly... you are saying to just create project folders and dump all the "old" documents in there so I can sync/export them as needed. So in this case:

PublisherListD (1st) in C:\Documents\Resources\PublisherListD.doc
PublisherListD (2nd) in C:\Documents\BookA\BookA.worp = now revised and contained within the project.

just move the "PublisherListD" into the .worp file versus the Resources file.

(If I got that right) that is kind of an obvious solution...but it wouldn't work in my case. I have thousands of files, and right now they are in folders according to their "use"/department etc. So "PublisherListD" is in the Resources file. Moving it to "BookA" project (saved to C:\Documents\BookA\BookA.worpj)file wouldn't be efficient. When I need to find a Publisher List I have to (hope) to remember it is in Book A file. What if I am on Book Q? Which one is it in?

Folder categories make it easier to find things. Resources, Proposals, Marketing Materials, Timelines, WO Projects, etc. are ways you can find things. When you move the documents to a recent project you can't find them, unless they are ONLY associated with that project.

Sorry for the long posts. Still LOVE this software and want it to be the BEST!

Hi Edwin,

I lost the changes done on a document. It already happened 3 times in the past and now I'm sure it's because of a bug. I don't know exactly what cause the loss but I think there are 2 possibilities :
- I opened the doc in two different tabs, and work only on one.
- I copied a doc in the same project and kepp the same doc name that the original.
It happened in 3 different projects in the past. It's a scary to lose my work and not knowing what to do to prevent it.

@Andrej,

It would not be too much work on my side, however, I have to wait for all the 3rd party 'software library' vendors to upgrade their SDK to support 64bit first, before I can start the work for 64bit Office support, hopefully, I expect in half of a year they all will provide new versions of the SDK's that Writing Outliner relies on.

It's OK, Edwin, I'm not blaming you, you have always clearly stated that your program is for Word 32-bit only, I just never paid attention because I used to have an old machine with Windows and Office XP and it wasn't relevant anyway. I'm just sorry because I really got used to your program for creative work and now after purchasing a new beast with complete 64-bit MS software (which improved everything else) it's a disappointment.
A silly question, since I'm not a programmer - does developing a version compatible with 64-bit Word involve a complete repogramming of Writing Outliner, or is it more or less a matter of compiling? How soon do you think your hitherto very happy clients can expect the 64-bit-compatible version?
Best, Andrej
