Color index cards, high resolution screen support, and other corkboard usability improvements

Posted in: Book writing software, Version History by Edwin on March 27, 2020

I’m excited to announce that WritingOutliner version 1.9.39 has been just released.

Among a bunch of other improvements, two of the major new features are:

  • Color index cards for the corkboard
  • Full support for high resolution screens such as 4K monitors. See the video below.

Hello Edwin.. Hope this message finds you well amid the current chaotic situation. Just two quick questions:
1- Is it possible to add sub documents and sub-sub documents in the current version of WO?
2- Does WO support Arabic characters in the index card? The old WO did not show Arabic characters correctly.
Thanks again for all your great efforts

  2. @al,

    1 – Yes.
2 – Just tested, currently the editors of the index card titles and synopsis are able to display Arabic characters correctly, but not on the graphical surface of the cards after leaving edit mode. I’ll fix that.

Thanks Edwin. Hope you can find a solution for this problem. Actually I have bought both mindvisualizer and Writing outliner and they both have this problem in showing arabic letters on graphical suface. This happens in many other programs. But otherwise, both programs support arabic fine in editing modes.

    Dear Edwin
Hope you are doing well. Thanks for your great software. I have downloaded the new version and it looked very nice and more elegant and worked on office 2016 very fast. There were more problems with Arabic letters as they now do not show properly on titles pane on the left. And an error showed when I tried to merge the draft branch to a sub-folder within the project folder.
I uninstalled using wise uninstaller and tried to reinstall again the full version of the old version of writing outliner. It was working fine before on word 2013 (I have it installed alongside word2016 just to be able to work on wo). But now the old version freezes when trying to open any existing project. Is there something you can advise?
    Thanks again

The old version of WO can create new projects but freezes when trying to merge branches.

Another note: I could not find the link to the latest stable full version of old writing outliner. The link on the download page only downloads the the latest trial version and the history of versions link does not work..

Sorry for annoying you Edwin but after uninstalling some recently installed software, and reinstalling old WO several times, it went back to work normally. Thanks again for all your efforts

Thanks Edwin and really sorry for my panic. I have many projects created by your great software WO and I feared I am going to lose my access to them. I found out the problem was in other recently installed calendar software. The new version looks faster and more elegant. Wish you all the best and thanks for all your efforts.

    Dear Edwin,

Does WO also includes the option of using WikiWords and Wiki-Navigation so that one can link the index cards together.

    Thanks.

  15. Hello Ajit,

Can you be more specific about WikiWords and Wiki-Navigation? Thanks.

  16. Ajit

    Dear Edwin,

    Thanks for your quick reply.

The following two webpages give a good overview of WikiWords and Wiki-Navigation:

    https://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/TWiki/WikiWord

    http://wikidpad.sourceforge.net/help/Using%20WikiWords.html

Basically, one can create links and new pages, on the fly, while writing. This is probably, the coolest feature of a wiki.

Wiki based navigation would be an outline based on the hyper-linkings between the different WikiWords. But this is rather a secondary feature.

I was wondering if Writing Outlines might be offering the possibility of linking the indexcards using such Wiki-Links/Wiki-Words.

  17. Ajit

    Dear Edwin,

In the most simple form a wiki-based navigation will use double-brackets [[like this]] or CamelCase words to link to another note by title. If the note/index card does not exist it will be created on the fly.

    Thanks Edwin.

I would like to report that I have downloaded the latest version of WO and am trying to install it. But Word reports that the addin is causing problems and that it should be disabled in order to start t.he program. After doing this, Word 2016 restarts as usual.

  20. @Ajit,

Would you go to Word’s About window and check if your Word’s 32bit or 64bit? I must say while WritingOutliner is designed to work under both 32bit and 64bit, 64bit is the main target now.

  21. Ajit

    Hi Edwin,

Thank you for the reply. It’s 64 Bit.

  22. @Ajit,
    Would you try the following:
    1. Start Word, go to File -> Options -> Add-ins, find “Manage: COM Add-ins” and click Go, a new window will appear.
    2. Now check if an item called “CoOutliner4Word” is present and checked.
    3. If not, try the following:
    a. Remove the “CoOutliner4Word” item from the list.
    b. Close all Word windows, all.
    c. Reinstall WritingOutliner again.
    d. If everything is ok now, you’ll find the “WritingOutliner” Office tab or menu depending on your Word version, which means WritingOutliner is now re-enabled.

  23. Robert McGaffic

    Edwin,

I am using a Microsoft Surface Booklap with a 3000 X 2000 high resolution display. The display of information looks nothing like that displayed on your web page:

    1. Left pane items row height is too short and items overlap when the font size in enlarged
    2. Icons do not scale and can barely be seen
    3. Tag list looks like its 3 or 4 point font, unreadable without a magnifying glass
    4. Tabs at top of middle pane have lower half of text hidden

What controls are you using for the left pane’s hiearchical grid and the tab control? Any chance of this being fixed soon, or will it be five years from now?

    Thanks,
    Bob
