Yes it's read from MS Word, but MS Word has 2 different characters counts : "Characters" and "Characters (whith spaces)" in the statistics screen. The second one is the more interesting.

AVOID HAVING TO SCROLL DOWN IN EACH DOCUMENT.....over and over and over and over!

OK this is making me nuts.

If I have 3 long documents open and am going back and forth between them, each time I click to another document I end up at the top/beginning of the document!

If I am on page 6 in DocumentA, page 15 in DocumentB and page 21 in DocumentC, when I switch from A to B, instead of being back on page 15 where I was...I am back on page 1 and having to scroll back down.

Then back to A where I was on page 6...now back on page 1

Then back to C where I was on page 21...now back to page 1

I am actually getting dizzy!

Outliner's Greatest Shortcomings for Commercial Writers

After discovering Outliner on Bits du Jour a few months ago, I ditched Scrivener and wholeheartedly embraced Outliner. However, Outliner suffers from a couple shortcomings that cause a major hassle for this commercial writer.

Quite frankly, it sucks swamp water that two Projects can’t be easily merged into one and documents can’t easily be copied or moved from one Project to another. Those shortcomings seriously hurt the productivity of a commercial writer.

Often the advertising ‘boilerplate’ created for one client can be used in another client’s project (subject to some revision, of course). That is why Outliner should possess the capability of easily copying documents to another Project!

As it stands now, I must ‘copy & paste’ documents from one Project to another. When a dozen or so documents are involved, that process is a big hassle.

Now please let me offer a real life example of why a ‘merge’ function is essential.

A significant portion of my commercial writing is the creation of textual content for web sites. Client Jane Doe had a vision of two wonderful web sites for her company. So, I started separate Outliner Projects for the textual content of each web site. After a few weeks, Jane Doe decided to consolidate her double vision into just one grand site. Ugh, a simple way of merging both of her Outliner Projects would have been so nice! But instead, it was a huge ‘cut & paste’ job.

Please incorporate the suggested features…and thereby tremendously increase its appeal to the big market represented by commercial writers.

@pking36330, good suggestion. Actually, (If I recall it correctly), by design Writing Outliner already remembers all original file path of the imported documents, so it's also possible to sync those imported files. However, currently it doesn't remember the exported file path. But it's possible.

More discussion on this topic here: http://writingoutliner.com/forum/topic/using-old-word-documentsending-up-with-multiple-copies

How about Writing Outliner checking the root documents exported from a project to see if they have changed, and incorporating those individual document changes into the project file (.woprj file). That way if I've updated an individual document in Word, the change would be reflected in the overall project when I open it again in Writing Outliner. I know you can't map to the individual Word documents all over a hard drive that we import into a project, but Writing Outliner should be able to remember where it exported documents to and use them to compare for changes when opeing a project.

This is really necessary to maintain version control or you are forcing us to use only Writing Outliner OR MS Word. Or we must remember which is latest or go through a painful version comparison to ensure we are using the latest document every time.

Love the software:
1) Much easier SAVE function--I am trained to "CONTROL S" automatically every few minutes, and having to hold down 4 keys is awkward. Give us an easy hotkey!

2) The ability to open a .woprj file from a shortcut or Windows Explorer and have it open in Word

3) A longer list area for stored/recent Projects. Once I hit that max now, I will have to hit OPEN and cruise hundreds of files to find the right one (without using Windows Explorer since it won't open that way

thanks! I know you have other priorities too--

Hi Edwin,

You are right. Corkulous looks like a flexible cork-board application with mind mapping features. I found it very similar to how I thought Writing Outliner with mind mapping feature might be like. A mind mapping function overlaid on the corkboard. :-)

This is of course only one possibility of how one can implement a blending of the writing outliner corkboard with mindmapping, and might help serve as a possible model. I am sure this can be implemented in other ways as well, and look forward to a mind mapping feature, in whatever way you implement it. :-)

I mentioned this is in the feedback, but I think it is important enough to warrant a mention here also: the ability to make cross references to other notes in the project. Currently, if you want to put a cross reference it only gives you options for the current note.

Edwin, I am wondering if in the forthcoming version you dropped the annoying behavior of Writing Outliner automatically capitalizing all words in the document title (or added the possibility to turn it off)? I am preparing a novel outline and it is REALLY annoying having to correct all the titles again after the software automatically ruins them.

OK :) here are some improvement ideas for this great tool :

- Provide an option to set the size of index cards. On my 10-inch netbook, I can see 4*3=12 cards at the same time, too few to really work with the corkboard.

- Allow to select multiple index cards on the corkboard view instead of only one after another

- If a Word file is imported into WO and has the same name as an existing document in WO, then the text of the latter should be replaced by the new text, but the metadata are kept (tags, notes, synopsis ...). It would allow the user to apply treatments outside of the WO and then reinjected in WO without losing the metadata previously entered into WO.

- Compile branch should create a new document in the root of the branch instead of a temporary document in the Compiled Output because the user has to export and re-import to use it in the story (as far as I understand the merge feature).
The merged document shoult aggregate all the notes, tags, synopsis, and target words/chars counts of the source documents.

- Allow the user to change the order of the labels, status, and tags to fit its needs or provide at least an alphabetical order, instead of creation order.

- Allow to create and delete status and labels.

- Reduce the time to display tooltips when you fly over an item, one second is too much, 500ms or 250ms would be better.

- Allow to edit keyboard shortcuts to fit user habits (I prefer SHIFT+ALT+UP to move up a document for example because this is the shortcut used by MS Word in the outline view)

Keep up the good work !

Productivity monitoring feature like in "Liquid Story binder" would be nice :
- total editing time of the document (in hours) to be inclued below the creation date of the doc for example
- global statistics for all documents in the story folder (global editing time, global words written in each week since the creation of the story eg Week 1 : 25420 words / 22 hours, Week 2 : 19032 words / 15 hours,...).
Could be particulary usefull during nanowrimo
Sorry I can't stop sending functions ideas :)

Here are some other useful functions:
- apply the page layout (margins, orientation, size, line numbers ...), styles , header and footer from one document to all others in the root folder (story folder or research or notes folder). It's time consuming to apply new parameters on x docs.
- Automatically fill properties of MS Word document: "Author" with the user name of Outliner Writing, "Title" of the document with the Title of the document as it appears in the left panel, "Keywords" with the tags of the doc, "Status" with Status of the doc,"Comments" with the doc's notes. These properties of MS Word can be included in the headers and footers and also be printed.

Thanks a lot.
